Pittsburgh Pirates Information
The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of Major League Baseball's older teams, currently playing their games at the PNC Park stadium. PNC Park is built near to the grounds of the famous Three Rivers Stadium, where anyone buying Pittsburgh Pirates tickets in the last thirty years would have seen them play. It's not unfair to say however that it's the people who buy Pittsburgh Pirates tickets today who have the much better deal – PNC Park has been labeled one of the best stadiums in modern baseball, and with some of the cheapest ticket prices in the game, it's difficult to pass up a visit.
The team colors are black, gold, and white, matching those of the flag of Pittsburgh itself and that of the NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Prior to the late 1940s the colors had been red white and blue, and they were one of the first teams in baseball to permanently change their colors. That is not their only first however; they also played the first World Series night game and were the first team to sign Indian players to the league.
Of course Pittsburgh Pirate tickets have not been in demand just because of their colors. The Pittsburgh Pirates have won the World Series five times since it began. They even played in that historic first series, unfortunately losing to Boston. They did manage to win just a few years later, defeating the Detroit Tigers. These games have only been a small mark on what has been a long and interesting history for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates started over 130 years ago, simply listed as "Allegheny" in the standings. The name didn't last long however, and when the team switched over to the National League in the late 1880s it was renamed as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, although Allegheny was still a separate city located across the river from Pittsburgh right up until 1907. During this time Owner and Manager Horace Phillips sold the team to a new owner, Dennis Mcknight.
The final name change to the pirates occurred only a few years later, and has stayed with the team ever since, through a variety of different logos and styles. The name change has an interesting story surrounding it. One the many players signed by the Alleghenys was Lou Bierbauer, previously a second baseman for the Philadelphia Athletics, an American Association team. However, the Athletics had failed to put the player on their reserve list, and the signing lead to many protests from the team, claiming their actions to be "Piratical," even though the Team had done nothing wrong. Obviously, the name stuck!
As Pittsburgh Pirate tickets holder know, the team has had plenty of ups and downs in its long history, from their stunning World Series wins in the sixties and seventies to being labeled as "the worst team in baseball" during the eighties. Manager Jim Leyland managed to fix the team's poor reputation however, thanks to young star players like Barry Bonds and Steve Beuchele. This led to the Pirates winning three division titles.
If you do not have Pittsburgh Pirates tickets, you can watch the games on FSN Pittsburgh. You can also listen on WPGB, a talk radio station which the Pirates switched to relatively recently, ending their relationship with station KDKA after 61 years in order or pursue a large audience. Bob Prince and Lanny Frattare are among the longest running play-by-play announcers for the team, though the current calling team consists of Tim Neverett and Greg brown.
However, watching and listening can't make up for being able to get some Pittsburgh Pirate tickets and enjoy watching the game live in one of the best baseball stadiums ever built and considering the cheap prices, there's no reason not to give the Pirates and PNC park a go!
