Cincinnati Reds Information

Many sports fans know the city of Cincinnati best for being the home of the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League.  However, anyone who lives remotely close to the city of Cincinnati will tell you that it is very much indeed a baseball city.  The Cincinnati Reds have been the heart and soul of the city's sports world since the franchise's inception in the year 1882.  The team name was inspired by a different team than had previously played in Cincinnati, the first true professional baseball team ever, the Cincinnati Red Stockings.  In fact, the version of the club that you see today kept that name until the year 1889.  That was the year that they left the American Association and joined the National League, in which they still reside to this day.  Upon making the move to the National League, they decided to drop the "Stockings" from the name and simply shorten it to the Reds.

The Cincinnati Reds franchise today is widely recognized as one of the most storied in baseball, and they have plenty of hardware they've acquired through the years to back it up.  The team currently ranks sixth on the all time list for World Series championships, with a total of 5.  Equally impressive is the amount of legendary players and managers that the team has employed through the years.  This is a list that boasts many Hall of Famers, not to mention one very infamous player that is absent from the Hall of Fame.  That player is Pete Rose, baseball's all time hits leader who was banned from entry into the hall because of his betting on the game while being both a player and manager for the Reds in the 1980's.  The list of greats isn't just limited to the playing field; however, as the Reds can also lay claim to having one of the greatest broadcasters the game has ever seen in Marty Brennaman.  Brennaman and his late partner Joe Nuxhall were a staple of the city for thirty years and will always be beloved for their efforts.  Marty continues to call Reds games to this day, and is not only the voice of the Reds on radio, but is also one of the most recognizable figures that the city has to offer.

The current version of the team is part of the Central Division in the National League, and they play in a stadium known as the Great American Ballpark.  The stadium opened in March of 2003, and is widely known as a hitter's ballpark because of its homerun friendly dimensions.  The park strikes fear into many opposing pitchers, and makes for some spectacularly exciting offensive slugfests.  From the beautiful backdrop featuring many of the city's landmarks, to the numerous tributes to past players and personalities, the Great American Ballpark is a great place to experience the heart of baseball.  Cincinnati Reds tickets are always a hot commodity because of the love affair that the city has shared with the team through the years.  Despite having the disadvantage of being a small market team, each year the city of Cincinnati eagerly awaits opening day and the promise that a new season brings.  In an era where many teams in smaller markets consider leaving for greener pastures in a more populated city, it's nice to see that there are still franchises like the Cincinnati Reds who grow roots in a city that stand the test of time.

Whether it be the Big Red Machine (a nickname for the team while it dominated baseball in the 1970's), the famous Nasty Boys bullpen of the 1990 world championship team, or one of the many other incarnations of this storied club, no one can deny that the Reds have an incredibly rich history and are firmly entrenched in the annals of the game of baseball.
